PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Transport deputies are assigned inmate transport duties. The Transport deputy assigned such duty will act in accordance with the state rules and regulations and Detention directives. The Transport deputy will provide for the safe and secure transport of inmates. The Transport deputy reports directly to the Judicial Services sergeant or designee.

A. Day-to-day duties:
- Check the Scheduled Events Report and have inmates at scheduled appointments.
- Ascertain proper identification of the inmate prior to transporting to another location.
- Thoroughly search the inmate prior to being transported and upon return to the facility.
- Prior to leaving facility properly secure all inmates with approved restraining equipment.
- Transport inmate accompanied by proper paperwork or proper documentation from a facility to another location.
- Complete the Inmate Transport Screen in Jail Management System (JMS) for every inmate being transported from the facility.
- Follow all safety and security measures when transporting.
- Immediately notify the Judicial Services sergeant of any unusual occurrences that transpire during the course of the shift.
- Assist the bailiffs with courtroom security as instructed by the Judicial Services sergeant.
- Accountability for inmates while in his/her custody.
B. Vehicle inspection:
- Inspect the vehicle thoroughly before and after transporting inmates.
- Maintain vehicle, security equipment and weapon.
C. Policy and procedure:
- Utilize security procedures in accordance with agency and detention policy and procedures.
- Possess thorough knowledge of radio procedures.
- Posses knowledge of court proceedings and paperwork.
D. Transport Order/Writs:
- Upon notification from the Judicial Services sergeant, of what orders are to be completed, the Transport deputy will make proper notification to the facility outlined on the order. The following will be completed:
- County facility - Contact their inmate records department and arrange for pick up. Question if the inmate is needed for court in their county within the time of the order
- State facility - Contact their inmate records department at least 24 hours prior to arrange for pick up.
- Upon completing the notification process with the facility records department and providing them with an estimated time of arrival, a list will be provided to the Judicial Services sergeant.
- Prior to the transport deputies leaving to pick up the inmate(s), the Booking sergeant will be provided with a copy of the order(s).
- Upon the return of the inmate to the Hernando County Detention Center, a copy of the order will be stamped “served” and forwarded to the Judicial Services sergeant with a copy of the hold order. Any other paperwork on the inmate will be given to Booking.
E. Warrants:
- Upon notification from the Judicial Services sergeant on what warrants are to be completed, the transport deputy will make proper notifications to the facility records department.
- Upon completing the notification process with the facilities records department, a list of those individuals who bonded or transferred will be provided to the Judicial Services sergeant. The warrants unit will also be notified of the status of those inmates that were unable to be picked up.
- Prior to the transport deputy leaving the facility to pick up the inmate(s), the Booking sergeant will be provided with a copy of the warrant(s).
- Upon the return of the inmate to our facility, a copy of the warrant will be stamped “served”, placed in the inmate’s file and then the file will be brought to the Classification Unit.
F. Other administrative duties:
- Schedule all transport runs in Scheduling Events Screen of JMS.
- Verify cash bonds, purges and surety bonds with booking sergeant or designee and deliver all bonds to clerk of court ensuring proper receipting with clerk of court.
- Collect court paperwork twice a day from the Courthouse.
- Training deputies will conduct field training for newly assigned deputies to the Transport Unit, as directed by the Judicial Services sergeant.
- Wear issued body armor when working with or around inmates.
- Perform additional duties as directed by higher authority.
