Volunteer Auxiliary Deputy Program


Sheriff Al Nienhuis and the men and women of the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office are ever so thankful for the amount of support that we continually receive from our community. Reflecting  the recent tragedies and attacks, we have noticed an even greater, almost overwhelming, amount of support from our friends in the community.

For those who may be interested, there is another way to volunteer in your community and provide armed backup to our proud and professional law enforcement team.
    
The Hernando County Sheriff’s Office may offer opportunities for volunteer Auxiliary Deputy Positions.    

If you are at least 20 years old AND:

  • Have a clean driving history

  • Do not have any significant or recent illegal drug usage

  • Do not have mental health issues

  • Will be truthful on the application, throughout the hiring process,
    and while volunteering at the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office

  • Have excellent moral character

You may be a great candidate for Hernando County Auxiliary Deputy.
 

This program is a modified law enforcement academy, certified by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, consisting of approximately 364 hours of hands on training.
The course material covers topics such as Introduction to Law Enforcement, Criminal Law, First Aid, High Liability, Defensive Tactics, Firearms Training and much more.

The Auxiliary Deputy Program is geared toward professionals who have an interest in law enforcement and who want to give back to their community. Classes are scheduled at night and on weekends. The program takes approximately six months to complete. There is no cost to the participant to attend the program.

Individuals who successfully complete the Auxiliary Police Academy have full law enforcement capabilities while in the company of a law enforcement officer.
These duties and responsibilities include full arrest powers, the ability to provide armed back up to other law enforcement officers, issue traffic citations, etc.

The position of Auxiliary Deputy is a state certified position. Applicants must be at least 20 years of age, a U.S. citizen, have a high school diploma or GED, and must pass an extensive background check.
