CHARACTERISTICS OF THE CLASS:

 

The Certified Nurse Assistant (CNA)/Phlebotomist’s basic duties are to assist the nursing staff in the care of inmates incarcerated in the detention facilities in accordance with established policies and procedures of the facility and the accepted standard of nursing assistant’s practice within the state. The primary responsibilities are to assist inmates with activities of daily living as needed, obtain vital signs of inmates and report them to the nursing staff, conduct medical intake screenings, draw labs and prepare specimens to send to the laboratory as ordered by the physician, respond to emergencies, and assist the nursing staff with administrative tasks as indicated. The CNA/Phlebotomist functions under the supervision of a licensed practical nurse or a registered nurse and/or the facility physician and reports directly to the Registered Nurse Manager. 

 

 

 

LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS:

 

The CNA will ensure that his/her State of Florida Certified Nursing Assistant license is current and all Continuing Education Unit (CEU) requirements are met. Copies of the State of Florida issued license must be submitted to the Medical Records Technician no later than the first day of the month the license is due to expire. Copies of all CEUs must also be submitted at that time.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

 

A. Day-to-Day Duties:

 

Maintain a professional, courteous and respectful demeanor at all times.

 

Collect blood or laboratory samples and prepare specimens to send to the laboratory

as ordered by the physician, reporting any inability to collect ordered labs to staff

nurse on duty.

 

Obtain complete vital signs on all inmates housed in the medical wings daily,

reporting any abnormal findings to the staff nurse assigned to the wing.

 

Assist during clinic visits and sick call if needed.

 

Obtain other ordered vital signs or weight checks as instructed by nursing staff,

reporting findings to nursing staff delegated task by.

 

Collect blood or laboratory samples perform skin tests for tuberculosis and other

tests ordered by the Physician.

 

Assist inmates with activities of daily living as needed.

 

Observe and report abnormal signs or symptoms to nursing staff.

 

Communicate to nursing staff/supervisor any potentially significant medical

complaints discovered during routine duties.

 

Respond to emergencies performing basic first aid and assisting as trained.

 

Assist in training of new personnel.

 

Write transfer summaries and deliver them to the Booking Sergeant.

 

Track medical statistics as assigned.

 

Initiate flow sheets as required.

 

Perform office duties including filing, pulling charts, and tracking laboratory results

as indicated.

 

Maintains Records/Lab, etc.:

 

Accurately document each health care interface.

 

Maintain lab cart and laboratory, ordering and replenishing supplies as needed.

 

Other Administrative Duties:

 

Maintain confidentiality of both medical and mental status of inmates.

 

Assist in maintaining medical records, file medical paperwork to be scanned into charts.

 

Maintain supplies and work area.

 

Monitor laboratory results, pulling charts and matching against labs ordered,

referring any critical lab results to nursing staff immediately.

 

Performs additional duties as directed by higher authority.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

 

Training and Experience:

 

Graduate of an accredited Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA.) program.

Currently licensed in the State of Florida to perform work and render care in the role of Certified Nursing Assistant.

Phlebotomy experience preferred.

 

Knowledge, Abilities and Skills:

 

Knowledge of general office practices and procedures

Ability to work quickly and accurately without constant supervision

Knowledge of business English, spelling, and arithmetic

Ability to handle confidential matters without compromising confidentiality

Ability to operate standard office equipment such as typewriter, copy machine and computer terminal.

 

Essential Physical Skills:

 

Ability to communicate orally

Ability to access, input, and retrieve information from a computer.

Ability to sit or stand for long periods of time

Ability to walk unassisted

Ability to endure acts of physical exertion and endure periods of duty under sometimes stressful situations including activities such as lifting/carrying, reaching, climbing, pulling, good near and distant vision (with or without correction), Good hearing (with or without hearing aid), kneeling, bending, pushing, standing, crawling, balancing, smelling, stooping, jumping, and running.

Ability to respond to a vast array of medical emergencies, delivering quality emergency care to all patients at all times.
