CHARACTERISTICS OF THE CLASS


Under the general supervision of the Director of Scientific Investigations, performs varied, complex work, both clerical and scientific. Work is performed with limited supervision and requires that duties be accomplished with a degree of independence and at a level of responsibility, exercising good judgment and initiative in the performance of assigned duties. This would also require skilled and accurate typing and knowledge of Sheriff’s Office policy and procedures. Work is reviewed through observation, work products and results obtained.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Handles incoming phone calls, answers routine questions and routes phone calls appropriately.

File maintenance; filing and retrieval of fingerprint cards, locate, and retrieve fingerprints and other pertinent information from other jurisdictions, general clerical duties.

Uses computer terminal for record keeping, correspondence, work orders, and reports.

AFIS entries, print development and comparison.

Analyzes, compares, evaluates and identifies latent and rolled print impressions. Provides verification of print identifications when needed.

Participates in Sheriff’s Office Community Relations activities as directed.

Performs related work as assigned or required.

Assists in the processing of crime scenes and lab evidence.

Collects and packages biologically and chemically contaminated evidence.

QUALIFICATIONS

Training and Experience
Associates of Science degree from an accredited college or university in a field related discipline preferred. Practical experience in the field can be substituted for the formal education background. Considerable experience in fingerprint identification.

Knowledge, Abilities and Skills

Operational knowledge of computer hardware and software

Knowledge of the modern principles and techniques of finger and palm print identification.

The ability to give qualifying testimony in the field of fingerprint taking, collection, and preservation.

Knowledge of computer systems and operations as they apply to fingerprint and other means of biometric identification

Ability to work with a high degree of independence.

Inter personal skills.

Time management skills; ability to maintain accurate records, logs, and files.

Knowledge of crime scene processing methods and chemical and/or biological
safety procedures.

ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL SKILLS

Ability to communicate orally and posses’ written skills and a basic knowledge of arithmetic.
Ability to access, input, and retrieves information from a computer.
Ability to sit or stand for long periods of time.
Ability to walk unassisted.
Acceptable eyesight (with or without correction).
Acceptable hearing (with or without hearing aid).
Ability to carry moderate weight (i.e. boxes, shredded reports, file stacks, etc.).
