A.    PHILOSOPHY OF THE RAPID RESPONSE TEAM:
  • The Rapid Response Team’s body of knowledge is dynamic and subject to constant change. Therefore, team members have the responsibility to provide feedback and input in order to maintain optimum policies and procedures regarding their duties, equipment and emergency response operations.
  • Once a deputy has obtained a position on the team, he/she is expected to remain on the RRT team for a minimum of two years.
  • Each RRT team member should possess and demonstrate special skills that could enhance the team's capabilities. Each member should demonstrate characteristics of initiative, job interest and dedication in the field of law enforcement.
B.   SELECTION PROCESS:
  • To be considered a candidate, applicants must have completed all probationary requirements and have at least one year of service with this agency as a deputy sheriff.
  • Candidates must successfully complete the state-mandated firearms qualification course.
  • Candidates must participate in an oral board interview with the Special Operations Division Commander and RRT supervisors.
  • Candidates must successfully pass a medical screening in accordance with S.O.P. 4270.00 and 29 CFR 1910.134 Appendix C. 5. The Sheriff, via chain of command, must approve the final selection.
C.   FORMAL TRAINING:
  • Members of the RRT shall receive technical training in the areas of special weapons, equipment and tactics.
D.   IN-HOUSE TRAINING:
  • Periodic and regularly scheduled in-house training shall be conducted at the discretion of the Special Operations Division Commander and under the direction of the RRT team leader. The location and curriculum shall vary for each training session. Instructors specialized in the areas of team related functions shall be selected in accordance with training needs.
  • In-house training shall include, but not be limited to weapons and tactics and equipment familiarization.
  • Due to the physical demands that may be imposed during a critical incident call out, each team member shall be responsible for an overall, self-administered, physical fitness program in the areas of endurance, strength and agility.
  • Each team member shall be required to meet qualification standards with the assigned weapons on at least an annual basis. Team members who fail to meet the qualification standards may be formally suspended from all team functions and shall be subject to firearms re-qualification guidelines.
