CHARACTERISTICS OF THE CLASS:
Under the general supervision of a Sergeant or designee, will ensure that all persons legally arrested and detained in the Hernando County Detention Center, will be afforded the most expeditious system of booking procedures possible. During processing, assures that inmates will be housed in safe and secure surroundings. Will provide assistance to staff in the movement of inmates in the booking area to designated housing units. Duties are generally performed on an assigned shift, but may be called upon to continue assigned duties or special work assignments on other shifts and/or at such times as directed to best meet the efficient and effective operations of the Sheriff’s Office. Work is performed in accordance with prescribed and established agency detention directives. Performance is closely supervised and reviewed through personal observation, inspections, and by discussion and review of daily work for adherence to prescribed methods and standards.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
  • Conduct formal head counts of inmates and ensure they are correct.Enter information into Jail Management System (JMS). Ensure arresting deputy’s Probable Cause (P.C.) affidavits are completed correctly, and if required, check for victim notification, traffic citation, breath refusals, warrants, teletypes, etc. Accept inmates from other facilities, ensure all paperwork is correct, and enter into JMS.
  • Complete booking the inmate in the JMS.
  • Pat down inmates when they enter the facility. Place valuable property items into clear plastic property bag, footwear and outer clothing into a bag for inventory. Place inmate’s name on property bag.
  • If the inmate cannot bond out within a reasonable amount of time, dress the inmate in issued clothing and provide items per agency policy. Ensure that the inmate signs for property before being escorted to appropriate housing.
  • If an inmate is able to bond, assist the Release Deputy to facilitate release processing (if needed).
  • Conduct inspections, completing checklist for equipment, cleanliness and security.
  • Verify with the Arresting Deputy if there are any outstanding warrants or holds from other counties at time of arrest.
  • Immediately notify the Booking Supervisor if the person being booked in is a Foreign National.
  • Supervise and assist in advisory and Misdemeanor Court hearings as needed.
  • Conduct strip searches of inmates arriving from other detention facilities, weekenders and those turning themselves in on outstanding warrants.
  • Check the criminal histories to ensure the inmate does not meet the criteria for Jessica Lunsford Act or the Anti-murder Act. If it does, stamp the original PC with the red Jessica Lunsford Act or the Anti-Murder Act stamp.
  • Complete all necessary booking paperwork: arrest, juvenile, Marchman, fill in information on P.C., distribute copies of P.C., make printout, stamp and highlight accordingly, and send teletype or fax, if required.

QUALIFICATIONS:

1.   Training and Experience:
  • The applicant must be an FDLE certified Corrections Officer. Law Enforcement candidates will be accepted, but must obtain dual certification within 12 months of appointment to the position.
  • Valid Florida Driver License

2.    Knowledge, Abilities and Skills:
  • Knowledge of the application of Agency Detention Directives and detention practices.
  • Knowledge of first aid practices.
  • Knowledge of CPR
  • Ability to understand oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to react quickly and calmly in an emergency.
  • Ability to work closely with others in a team.
  • Ability to prepare and present clear, accurate, concise and objective written and oral reports.
  • Ability to enforce the law, with use of control matrix, tact and impartiality and to deal courteously with peers, officers and the public.
  • Ability to recognize and understand the emotional and physical reactions of new intakes, inmates bound for court and anyone else that is functionally required in the booking section.

Essential Physical Skills:
Ability to maintain an above average physical condition and to be able to physically maintain control of an inmate.
