CHARACTERISTICS OF THE CLASS:
Under the general supervision of the Public Relations Manager or designee, the Community Outreach Coordinator will represent the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office by establishing positive relationships, conducting informative programs and, maintaining open lines of communication between the agency and members of the community. The Community Outreach Coordinator will be responsible for coordinating community events, implementing Community Relations Initiatives, and designing programs and educational materials for the public.  The individual appointed to the position of Community Outreach Coordinator is a member of the Sheriff’s personal staff, pursuant to F.S. 30.072(2).

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
  1. Develops and maintains positive, on-going relationships with external groups and individuals.
  2. Identifies program needs through citizen interaction.
  3. Coordinates (and/or provides assistance with) the planning and organization of community events, special events, and functions.
  4. Writes articles/produces videos highlighting HCSO community initiatives/programs for publication/posting.
  5. Seeks and obtains sponsors for HCSO initiatives/programs in the form of donations or in-kind services.
  6. Performs research and fact-finding for HCSO community programs and presentations.
  7. Makes presentations and speeches to the general public, individuals and groups.
  8. Acts as the HCSO designee for the Sheriff and/or his staff attending community functions or making presentations.
  9. Assists in program development.
  10. Receives and facilitates the distribution of Program Requests, agency wide.
  11. Participates in the planning, conception and design of HCSO exhibits and displays.
  12. Serves as civilian liaison to Hernando County Sheriff’s Charities.
  13. Coordinates and/or prepares special projects or programs at the direction of the Sheriff or his designee.
  14. Responds to scheduled and unscheduled events that may include nights, weekends, holidays, and/or on-call assignments as needed or directed.
  15. Coordinates Citizens Academy and other HCSO programs.
  16. Performs other duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS:
   A.  Training and Experience
  • High school diploma or GED (college preferred).
  • Must have the ability to work in a dynamic environment where conditions are subject to change rapidly.
  • Requires personal and professional integrity.


   B.   Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of general office practices such as computer input and retrieval, form letters, general correspondence, calculations, telephone, fax, and copy machines.
  • Knowledge of, and ability to demonstrate, techniques used to interact effectively with members of the community.
  • Ability to clearly speak, understand, read, and legibly write, English.
  • Ability to develop, create, and implement community programs and presentations.
  • Ability to multitask.
  • Ability to demonstrate exemplary customer service skills.
  • Ability to formulate goals and objectives.
  • Ability to plan events that will occur throughout the year.
  • Ability to evaluate and report on programs and services being offered.

  • Ability to deliver a wide-range of services to the community.

ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL SKILLS:
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to sit or stand for long periods of time.
  • Acceptable eyesight – with or without correction.
  • Acceptable hearing – with or without correction.
  • Possess manual dexterity sufficient to perform required job skills
  • Ability to lift/carry a minimum of 30 pounds
  • A valid driver’s license
  • Ability to operate a motor vehicle
  • Ability to operate a computer and general office equipment.
