CHARACTERISTICS OF THE CLASS:
Under the general supervision of the Lieutenant of the Operations Support Section, performs highly responsible, technical work of above average difficulty, in directing the work activities of members of the Marine Unit. Work involves routine patrol, transporting personnel or prisoners, training, search & rescue, and assisting road deputies. Duties are generally performed on an assigned shift but the employee may be called upon to continue the duties or work assignment on other shifts and/or at other times as directed. Work is assigned through oral or written form, from a superior officer. Employee exercises considerable independent judgment and latitude of individual initiative in the interpretation of work procedures. Work is reviewed through oral and written reports, discussions and personal observation for compliance and adherence to established procedures. Perform other duties as requested.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
  • Responsible for all duties as outlined in job description for "Deputy Sheriff"
  • Operates both water and land based vehicles with proficiency.
  • Supervises and/or assists in the training of other crew members; instructs, assigns, and supervises the work of subordinate employees through observation and written reports.
  • Responsible for search & rescue missions; assist road deputies when necessary.
  • Liaison with inside/outside agency personnel.
  • Conducts periodic reviews of work subordinates, materials, equipment, personnel appearance and work methods and procedures. Maintains close supervision, appraising, and evaluating conditions of performance for adherence and conformity to duties and methods as prescribed by Sheriff’s Office policy, rules and regulations, special or general orders.
 
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • High school diploma, GED, or equivalent.
  • Certification for completion of basic law enforcement training as required by the State of Florida.
  • Must have passed and obtained Certification from the State of Florida.
  • Must have passed and obtained the State of Florida Coast Guard Boating Safety Certification and/or obtain within 6 month of appointment.
 
KNOWLEDGE,SKILLS, & ABILITIES:
  • Knowledge of watercraft maintenance.
  • Knowledge of radio procedures; skill in the use of radio equipment.
  • Knowledge of emergency procedures.
  • Ability to make sound judgments based on past experiences and knowledge.
  • Ability to conduct periodic inspections to ensure safety and sea-worthiness of all watercraft.
  • Knowledge of water traffic laws, and maritime safety procedures.
  • Knowledge of Coast Guard boating regulations and requirements.
  • Ability to tread water in appropriate floatation device and/or swim.
 
ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL SKILLS:
  • 20/20 Vision (with or without correction)
  • Hearing: normal language level (with or without correction)
  • Ability to crawl ten yards
  • Ability to drag or lift or carry 150 pounds 25 feet
  • Ability to run 100 yards unassisted
  • Ability to scale a five foot fence
  • Ability to walk unassisted
  • Manual dexterity
  • Normal color perception
