POSITION OVERVIEW:
Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Detective plays a critical role in investigating technology-facilitated crimes against children, including possession, distribution, and production of child sexual abuse material (CSAM) and Human Trafficking. Detectives assigned to the ICAC Unit are responsible for conducting in-depth digital forensic investigations, executing search warrants, interviewing suspects, and collaborating with local, state, and federal task force partners to bring offenders to justice.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Follow GO 4058.00, Conducting Preliminary Investigations, and all other applicable policies, procedures, laws, and ICAC standards.
- Investigate and document all assigned cases and tips received via the ICAC Data System (IDS) or other sources.
- Ensure all investigations are properly documented; any departure due to exigent circumstances must be documented in the case file and reviewed by a supervisor.
- Maintain the access, retention, storage, security, and disposal of investigative information in compliance with federal and state laws.
MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS:
Because of the sensitive and high-impact nature of ICAC investigations, assigned detectives will receive ongoing mental health support.
- Detectives will undergo a mental health screening upon assignment and every six months, or as otherwise deemed necessary by supervision.
- After exposure to contraband images, detectives will be provided time for mental clarity, allowing them to step away from the work environment to refocus.
- Detectives who determine they can no longer serve in this capacity will be afforded the opportunity to assume a different investigative role within the Major Crimes Section.
- If at any time the assigned detective decides or determines he or she can no longer serve in this capacity, he or she will be afforded the opportunity to assume a different investigative role within the MCS.
TRAINING:
- All detectives assigned to ICAC investigations must complete ICAC-recommended training courses within one year of assignment.
- Additional training and certifications will be provided as needed to maintain investigative proficiency and meet evolving investigative standards.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Must be a sworn law enforcement officer with the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office in good standing.
- Strong computer and digital literacy skills preferred.
- Ability to manage sensitive investigations with discretion, professionalism, and resilience.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Willingness to complete all required ICAC and specialized training.
