Intelligence Unit
Sworn personnel conducting an investigation should not overlook the importance of sources of information within the investigative process. Sources may include information from witnesses, victims, informants, criminals, concerned citizens, or other persons. Additional sources may include, but are not limited to the following:
Computer research and report review for information contained in records, or contained in computer storage facilities;
Tax collector, property appraiser, and utility company records;
Pawn shops and other business entities;
Crime Analysis, other sworn personnel;
Criminal history and driver’s license information;
Records, such as bank and credit card statements (by subpoena, if necessary).
An important tool of an investigation requires solid preparation and planning. Interviews should take place as soon as possible after the incident, following a review of the information that is available.

Intelligence Unit
Investigations begin with the first notification that a crime may have been committed, and end when the case has been solved, the suspect has been arrested and prosecuted, or the case has been otherwise resolved. It is of critical importance that each aspect of the investigative process is conducted properly and in compliance with constitutional requirements and Florida statutes. In addition, reimbursement of investigative costs incurred by the Sheriff and his deputies in the performance of their duties is important for the citizens of Hernando County.
