CHARACTERISTICS OF THE CLASS:
Under the general supervision of the Fleet Coordinator, performs mechanical work of basic to average difficulty and responsibility in connection with the scheduled maintenance and basic repair of Sheriff’s Office vehicles. Work requires knowledge and skills in the performance of mechanical tasks involving repair, maintenance, and servicing of vehicles and related equipment. Employees may be on call for emergency repairs. Performs other work as requested.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
  • Performs preventative maintenance and service work on vehicles and related equipment.
  • Makes service calls and emergency repairs in the field as required.
  • Maintains records and reports as required for the efficient operation of area of assignment.
  • Repairs tires, checks electrical system, and replaces battery if required; maintains tire repair records; moves vehicles as requested or as appropriate.

QUALIFICATIONS
A.   Training and Experience
  • High school diploma, GED, or equivalent.
  • Completion of vocational or technical automotive program or one (1) year of relevant work in an automotive, tire, or repair shop.

B.    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of basic mechanical skills in repair and maintenance.
  • Knowledge of and skill in using the standard methods, practices, tools, and shop equipment of the automotive mechanical trade.
  • Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade.
  • Ability to diagnose, locate, define, adjust, and/or repair defects in vehicles and equipment, making necessary reports quickly and efficiently both in-house and on road calls.
  • Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.


ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL SKILLS:
  • Ability to stand for long periods of time.
  • Acceptable hearing (with or without correction).
  • Acceptable eyesight (with or without correction).
  • Ability to bend, stretch, kneel, and lift up to fifty (50) pounds.
