CHARACTERISTICS OF THE CLASS
The Classification Technician is responsible for processing documentation accurately related to the inmate files and
the electronic inmate files in JMS (Jail Management System).
The Classification Technician works in close coordination with the Classification Deputies.
The Classification Technician reports directly to the Classification Sergeant.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
The primary responsibility for the Classification Technician is the maintenance of the inmate files and the inmate electronic files in JMS (Jail Management System).
Create new or update files for each inmate admitted to the facility. Keep files up-to date with paperwork generated from the courts and related to the inmate’s incarceration.
Review new inmate file folders for accuracy prior to 1st appearance against JMS such as: Case numbers, charges, bond amounts, other agency holds.
Answer in-coming phone calls to the Classification Unit and route to appropriate persons.
Attend in-house court proceedings.
Attend 1st appearance in the Detention Center courtroom via video link – update inmate file folders and
JMS after 1st appearance with accurate bond information, bond conditions, sentencing information, and next court date.
Attend and take inmate file folders for in-custody County court via video link.
Track the progress of Fugitive from Justice Inmates through the court system and update any wanting agencies of the status.
Maintain written log for inmate file folders that are checked out (active & in-active).
Maintain the archive storage room for the current and previous year’s records on all released inmates.
Review all incoming emails and faxes for all important information to include, but not limited to - no information’s,
nolle prosequi, dismissed warrants, placement and removal of holds – ensuring that all necessary information is updated in the inmate file folders and JMS.
Communicate with other agencies via secure teletype utilizing FAM messaging on E-Agent.
Ensure all in-custody court dispositions are received for inmates that attended court on the scheduled day.
Received dispositions will be reviewed for accurate information. If the disposition is not accurate – contact Court Clerk’s
and have disposition updated with the correct information.
Enter all pertinent court information/sentencing in JMS and inmate file.
Prepare inmate files for release if completed with local charges.
Prepare and maintain released inmate file folders in appropriate storage areas.
Conduct file reviews on a regular basis of current inmate file folders to ensure accuracy of information in file, CCIS, and JMS.
Maintain communication with area Supervisors as to any important happenings in the unit.
Training and Experience
High School Diploma, GED or equivalent or a demonstrated level of competence in work performance which is determined by the Agency
to be acceptable during a period of employment not to exceed the designated probationary period.
Essential Physical Skills
Ability to communicate orally.
Ability to sit or stand for long periods of time.
Ability to walk unassisted.
Acceptable eyesight (with or without correction)
Acceptable hearing (with or without hearing aid)
Ability to carry moderate weight (i.e., boxes, shredded reports, file stacks, etc.)
