CHARACTERISTICS OF THE CLASS:
Under the general supervision of the assistant medical director, provides medical evaluations, chronic and acute medication management, and chronic care services to the inmate population. Under the guidance of written protocols filed per state requirements performs assigned professional, administrative and supervisory fun in the management of the family care for the inmate population with the Detention Center.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Perform medical evaluation son inmates referred by medical/mental health staff using established clinical guidelines. Provide treatment and order pharmaceuticals, diagnostic testing, and therapeutic management as required and appropriate for an incarcerated inmate, consistent with medical authority’s commitment to provide basic health care services to meet the serious health conditions of the inmate population.
- Document effectively and efficiently, all services rendered or ordered for an inmate in the electronic health record (EMR) or paper chart, in the absence of the EMR.
- Formulate medical diagnosis; determine/communicate appropriate level of housing, programs, etc.; notify appropriate administrative staff of any legitimate concerns (e.g. homicidal inmate with person-specific plan).
- Assist in the development, implementation, monitoring, and annual review of health care policies and procedures, as well as Clinical Guidelines and health related training materials.
- Order laboratory/diagnostic tests as needed; consult with and make referrals to other medical staff.
- Review and countersign diagnostic studies; inform inmates of their results in a timely manner; document justification for any change in treatment modality.
- Attend all Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI), Pharmacy and Therapeutic Committee (P&T), and other meetings as required.
- Prescribe medication within the constraints of the APRN Protocols as agreed to by the collaborative Physician; obtain/document consent to begin medications and manage inmates on these medications on a regular basis, as per policy.
- Utilize electronic medical record documentation format while maintaining inmate confidentiality, document the medical health diagnosis on problem list.
- Act as a consultant to detention staff as well as medical/mental health providers during/after working hours.
- Conduct Chronic Clinic with assistant of medical staff.
- Respond and triage all medical emergencies and implement emergency care when needed.
- Communicate and maintain a professional, effective working relationships with Hernando County Detention Center staff and outside provider agencies.
- Comply with all guidelines, directives, policies, procedures and protocols of the agency; follow all guidelines as provided by the by the medical director. Remain fiscally responsible by utilizing the formulary and ordering only medically necessary diagnostic tests/procedures.
- Participate in training/orientation of new employees, educate inmates in chronic and acute health conditions, and document education in the EMR.
- Maintain statistics as required; perform audits/studies on healthcare topics to improve processes and procedures, decrease costs, etc.

QUALIFICATIONS:
A. Training and Experience
- Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) degree or post-Mater’s Certification
- License as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) in the state of Florida.
- CPR-BLS or ACLS certification by the American Heart Association.
- One (1) year experience as a Family APRN or no less than two (2) years’ experience working within the healthcare field, in corrections environment.
B. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of basic pathophysiology, pharmacology, and psychopharmacology.
- Crisis intervention and advanced communication skills used to deescalate aggressive individuals, communicate with psychotic and difficult people, and perform medical risk assessments.
- Use of a variety of office and computer equipment and related software unique to this position.
- Solve a wide range of highly complex, multi-disciplinary problems, which must consider long-term, organization-wide planning.
