CHARACTERISTICS OF THE CLASS:
Under the general supervision of the Director of Public Relations, the Community Relations Coordinator (CRC) will represent the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office by creating and maintaining positive relationships with members of the community (in person) and via social media. The CRC will work closely with the Community Outreach Coordinator, facilitating programs and/or meetings both at the HCSO and in the community. The CRC will provide back-up to the Community Volunteer Coordinator, as needed. The CRC will be responsible for assisting in the coordination of volunteer appreciation events, Crime Watch Quarterly Meetings and will attend off-site meetings as required. The CRC will maintain all HCSO social media platforms, engaging citizens in performance and accomplishments of the agency. The individual appointed to the position of Community Relations Coordinator is a member of the Sheriff’s personal staff, pursuant to F.S. 30.072(2).

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
  • Develops and maintains positive relationships with members of the community through in-person contacts and via social media
  • Assist with the HCSO Volunteer Programs (screening, training, rescreening, and assignments of all HCSO volunteers).
  • Creates and implements strategies for maximizing the HCSO’s use of social media platforms to expand the agency’s outreach efforts and enhance relationships with members of community.
  • Prepares, maintains, and updates the social media events calendar to ensure identified social media objectives are consistently met.
  • Oversees the HCSO presence on social media platforms, creating (and ensuring) messages/posts are consistent with the HCSO mission, while monitoring reactions and commentary from the online community and developing appropriate responses.
  • Analyzes social media metrics and prepare periodic reports for the Community Relations Director. 
  • Handles photography and videography as needed. Prepares photos, slideshows, PSAs, graphics, etc., as needed.
  • Assists with the planning and organizing of community events, special events, and functions.
  • Receives and facilitates the distribution of Program Request, agency wide.
  • Participates in the planning, conception, and design of HCSO exhibits and displays
  • Coordinates and/or prepares special projects or programs at the direction of the Sheriff or his designee.
  • Responds to schedule and unscheduled events that may include nights, weekends, holidays, and/or on-call assignment as needed or directed.
  • Handles all Munis entries, ensures invoices are paid promptly, orders all promotional items, etc.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS:
A.      Training and Experience
  • High school diploma, GED or equivalent (college preferred).
  • Experience with managing social media platforms for government agencies.
  • Ability to work in a dynamic environment where conditions are subject to change rapidly.
  • Requires personal and professional integrity.

B. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of general office practices such as computer input and retrieval, form letters, general correspondence, calculations, telephone, fax, and copy machines.
  • Knowledge of, and ability to demonstrate, techniques used to interact effectively with members of the community. 
  • Ability to clearly speak, understand, read and legibly write in English.
  • Extensive knowledge and experience with commonly used social media platforms (e.g. Facebook, X – formally Twitter, YouTube, Next Door, etc.)
  • Knowledge of current technology and trends for communications.
  • Skill in graphics, photography/videography, design and publishing.
  • Skill in editing and copy writing.
  • Ability to multitask and work under high stress situations.
  • Ability to work long hours in stressful situations.
  • Ability to demonstrate exemplary customer service skills.
  • Ability to formulate goals and objectives.
  • Ability to plan events that will occur throughout the year.
  • Ability to make sound decisions.

ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL SKILLS:
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to operate a computer, general office equipment, and video/photo editing software.
  • Ability to sit or stand for long periods of time.
  • Acceptable eyesight – with or without correction.
  • Acceptable hearing – with or without correction.
  • Possess manual dexterity sufficient to perform required job skills
  • Ability to lift/carry a minimum of 30 pounds
  • Possess a valid driver’s license
